From the 3d printing of glass to photographing with natural materials. From 29th of January the ArTechLab presents “New Matter”: a special edition of the yearly exhibition in Tetem Art Space. This time with work of student AND alumni researchers. Central theme of the exhibition is the experimental research with new materials and techniques.
With new materials and technologies artists and designers can create things that were once difficult or even impossible to make but are now readily achievable. ArTechLab stimulates her researchers to experiment on the basis of their own fascination. Current year this resulted in a diversity of questions, like: How can you 3d print recycled glass? Can you make a sewing machine which doesn’t pierce through the fabric? Or, how can you photograph with natural materials? Again in this third edition ArTechLab shows the inventiveness and diversity of these research projects.
That this fascination persists after finishing ArtechLab show the alumni with their recent work. Alumna Roos Meerman (winner of the New Material Fellow 2014) makes machines that play with the limits of material and technology. For example, she uses warmth and air to blow up 3d forms or makes a drawing machine to transform sounds on paper or textile. And Corry van der Pol has further developed her tile print technique into tile tableaus with geometric patterns. Overall the ArTechLab exhibition New Matter shows an impression of the challenges and developments in the dynamic field of design, art and science.
ArTechLab is an initiative of ArtEZ Academy in Enschede. In this crossdisciplinair research lab at the cross section of art, design and science students explore new materials and technologies. The exhibition ‘New Matter’ also happily announces the transformation of ArTechlab into a new specialisation of Fine Art as from september 2015. The current ArTechLab offers the possibility to do experimental research, wherefor completely new uses or applications of new materials and technologies can emerge. The students work during their research project with professionals from the field. The team consists of: Eric Klarenbeek (founder, designer), Filip Jonker (artist), Isjah Koppejan (program manager, concept developer), David Menting (Interactive product designer) and Paul Jansen Klomp (Electronic engineer).

Artechlab presenteert New matter
Van het 3d printen van glas tot het fotograferen met natuurlijke materialen. Het ArTechLab presenteert onder de titel “New Matter” een speciale editie van de jaarlijkse tentoonstelling in TETEM kunstruimte. Deze keer met werken van student én alumni onderzoekers. Experimenteel onderzoek met de nieuwste materialen en technieken staat hierbij centraal.
Met nieuwe materialen en technologieën kunnen kunstenaars en vormgevers dingen maken die voorheen moeilijk of zelfs onmogelijk waren. ArTechLab stimuleert haar onderzoekers om op basis van de eigen fascinatie experimenten te doen. Dit jaar resulteerde dit weer in een pluriformiteit aan vragen, waaronder: Hoe kun je met gerecycled glas 3d printen? Kun je een naaimachine maken die niet door de stof heen prikt? Of hoe kun je met natuurlijke materialen fotograferen? Ook in deze derde editie laat ArTechLab de inventiviteit en diversiteit van verschillende onderzoeksprojecten zien.
Dat deze fascinatie ook verder gaat na ArTechLab laten de alumni in de tentoonstelling zien met recent werk. Alumna Roos Meerman (winnaar van de New Material Fellow 2014) maakt machines die spelen met de limieten van materiaal en technologie. Zo gebruikt ze warmte en lucht om 3D-geprinte vormen op te blazen of maakt ze een tekenmachine die geluid omzet in patronen op papier of textiel. En zo heeft Corry van der Pol haar tegelprint techniek verder ontwikkeld in tegeltableaus met geometrische patronen. “New Matter” laat met deze groepstentoonstelling een veelzijdig beeld van de uitdagingen en ontwikkelingen in de dynamische beroepspraktijk van design, kunst en wetenschap zien.
ArTechLab is een initiatief van de ArtEZ Academie in Enschede. In dit crossdisciplinair onderzoekslab op het snijvlak van kunst, design en wetenschap gaan studenten aan de slag met nieuwe materialen en technieken. New Matter kondigt ook de verandering aan van ArTechlab naar een nieuwe specialisatie binnen Fine Art vanaf september 2015. Het huidige ArTechLab biedt de mogelijkheid om experimenteel onderzoek te doen, waardoor geheel nieuwe gebruiksrichtingen, en toepassing van nieuwe materialen of productiemethoden aan het licht kunnen komen. Een team van adviseurs uit de beroepspraktijk (kunstenaars, ontwerpers, technisch instructeurs, elektronica-experts) begeleidt bij de uitvoering. Het team bestaat uit: Eric Klarenbeek (oprichter en designer), Filip Jonker (kunstenaar), Isjah Koppejan (conceptontwikkeling), David Menting (Interactive product designer) en Paul Jansen Klomp (Electronic engineer).
